Between 1853 and 1867, American whaleships frequented the bay hunting bowhead whales. Blunt White Library; ''Frances Henrietta'', of New Bedford, July 13–26, 1857, NWC; ''Navy'', of New Bedford, August 22–23, 1861, Kendall Whaling Museum (KWM); ''Cicero'', of New Bedford, July 15, 1862, September 18, 1863, KWM; ''Josephine'', of New Bedford, August 14–17, 1864, August 2–4, 22-23, 1865, KWM; ''Java'', of New Bedford, July 22–26, 1865, June 30-August 27, 1866, July 17–24, 1867, NWC.〕 On 28 July 1854, the bark ''Isabella'', of New Bedford, reported that as many as 94 ships were visible from her deck, only five of which were boiling oil.〔''Isabella'', of New Bedford, July 28, 1854, NWC.〕 On 12 July 1854, the ship ''Silas Richards'' (454 tons), of New Bedford, Capt. Wilcox, was driven ashore by ice and wrecked on the south west side of the bay.
